Just came across something interesting about Grimes and how she absolutely crushed it with NFTs back in 2021. Apparently when Wired asked her if she made more money from NFTs than her entire music career, she straight up said yes. That's wild when you think about it.
So here's the thing - Grimes dropped her War Fairies collection on Nifty Gateway during that whole 2021 NFT boom and walked away with around $6 million. The collection had digital artworks tied to her music plus this exclusive music video that sold for nearly $400k on its own. At the time, that was the kind of money that would make any artist sit up and pay attention.
Obviously the NFT market cooled off pretty hard after that initial hype cycle. Trading volumes tanked by like 50% in the years that followed. But what's interesting is that Grimes has been vocal about still believing in the potential. She's talked about wanting NFTs to get back to being a real tool for artists to actually monetize their work directly.
It's one of those moments that showed what was possible when web3 and music collided. Whether you're bullish or bearish on NFTs now, you can't deny that Grimes found a way to turn digital art into serious income when the timing was right. Makes you think about what other artists could have done if they'd jumped in during that window.
