Open-Source AI Agent Framework OpenClaw Goes Viral, Industry Concerned About Accelerated Commercialization of Large Models
Deep Tide TechFlow News, March 21 — According to CNBC, the open-source AI agent framework OpenClaw, created by Austrian independent developer Peter Steinberger, has rapidly gained popularity within three months and became the focus of NVIDIA’s annual GTC Developer Conference this week. NVIDIA CEO Jensen Huang called it “the most popular open-source project in human history” during his keynote speech and told CNBC that it is “absolutely the next ChatGPT.” NVIDIA also announced the launch of a security service called NemoClaw to promote OpenClaw adoption in the enterprise sector.
OpenClaw’s core capability is enabling developers to quickly build and manage autonomous AI agents on personal computers through communication channels like WhatsApp, Telegram, Slack, and others, without relying on cloud-based large models. Operating costs are significantly lower than mainstream services like OpenAI. Consulting firm GenerAIte Solutions CEO David Hendrickson said, “OpenClaw proves that fully autonomous AI can run at home without dependence on tech giants or large AI companies,” calling it a “black swan event” that large AI firms fear most.
Some industry insiders believe that OpenClaw’s popularity reveals potential flaws in current AI investment logic, suggesting that large language models may be accelerating toward commercialization. OpenAI, with a private market valuation exceeding $1 trillion, and Anthropic could face challenges. OpenAI CEO Sam Altman announced last month that Steinberger has joined OpenAI, and OpenClaw will continue to operate as an open-source project. Anthropic has also launched similar features to compete. However, Greylock partner Jerry Chen, an investor in Anthropic, believes that OpenClaw’s success does not diminish the value of underlying large models, and questions whether OpenClaw can become the market’s default standard.
