Abstract generation in progress

Former FTX CEO SBF made a public statement earlier this morning, 12/3, on Twitter (X), praising U.S. President Trump for pardoning former Honduran President (Juan Orlando Hernández). This statement has drawn significant attention, as SBF himself is currently seeking a pardon from Trump.

Former Honduran President Pardoned by Trump, SBF Posts Support

After former Honduran President Orlando was accused of involvement in drug trafficking and sentenced to 45 years in prison last year, Trump granted him a pardon on 12/2. Following the news, SBF immediately posted on X:

“I am very happy that Juan Orlando is free again. No one deserves it more than he does.”

Rewinding to 12/1, SBF also mentioned that he had met Orlando before, calling him one of the kindest, most dedicated people he had ever met, and explained that all his posts were published by a friend on his behalf.

FTX Case Still Under Appeal, SBF Actively Seeking Trump Pardon

SBF was convicted on multiple fraud and conspiracy charges in the FTX case in 2023 for misappropriating customer funds and is currently serving a 25-year sentence. His case entered review by the Second Circuit Court of Appeals last month, but the court is not expected to issue an opinion on whether to grant a retrial until next year at the earliest.

SBF’s parents have also been continuously advocating for him, hoping that, given Trump’s recent pardons of several figures in the crypto industry, he might also be released.

Once a Major Donor to Democrat Biden, SBF’s Chances for a Pardon Seen as Low

Although SBF is actively seeking a pardon from Trump, most observers believe his chances are slim, as he donated $5.2 million to the Democratic Biden (Joe Biden) campaign during the 2020 election, making him one of the key donors at the time.

In recent months, SBF has resumed activity on Twitter (X), repeatedly claiming through representatives that FTX still had the ability to pay out at the time of its collapse, and accusing the liquidation team of “mismanaging or delaying the release of funds,” arguments that continue to appear in his recent posts.

As shown in the chart below, prediction market platform Kalshi gives Trump only about a 3% chance of pardoning SBF this year—almost zero. Polymarket predicts SBF’s chances of being released before the end of 2025 are even lower, at just 2%. The market is clearly pessimistic about his chances for a pardon.
