The mysterious identity of Bitcoin’s anonymous founder Satoshi Nakamoto has come back into the spotlight with the lawsuit filed by prominent crypto attorney James Murphy against the U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS).

The lawsuit filed in the D.C. District Court aims to compel the institution to disclose information that could unmask one of the most mysterious figures in the history of technology.

Murphy, commonly known as “MetaLawMan” on X, is utilizing the Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) to force the DHS to release documents that could reveal who is behind the creation of Bitcoin. In the case, he is assisted by former U.S. Assistant Attorney Brian Field, who is an expert in FOIA litigation.

At the heart of the case are statements allegedly made by DHS Special Agent Rana Saoud during an industry conference in 2019. According to the court filing, Saoud told attendees that the agency had located and interviewed a group of four individuals responsible for the creation of BTC. Saoud claimed that these individuals detailed their motivations and the inner workings of cryptocurrency in meetings with DHS agents in California.

Despite these claims, the DHS has never confirmed or released such information publicly. Murphy argues that with Bitcoin becoming a trillion-dollar asset that now affects economies and attracts global investment, the public has a right to know who the founder of this cryptocurrency is.

Murphy expressed hope that Kristi Noem, the DHS Secretary appointed as part of the Trump administration’s efforts to increase transparency, would voluntarily publish the information.
