事件起因於 4 月 1 日，X 用戶 Benjamin White（@HelloBenWhite）發布了一篇長文與一段長達 8 分鐘的語音，詳細還原了自己遭遇釣魚攻擊（Phishing）並導致帳號被駭的慘痛經歷。他在貼文中特別標記了 X 的產品負責人 Nikita Bier，呼籲平台必須正視這個嚴重的安全漏洞。
面對用戶的求救與社群的長期不滿，Nikita Bier 迅速在該貼文下方給出了正面且強硬的回覆，並首度揭露了 X 正在部署的防禦機制：
「是的，我們已經知道了。我們正在實施一項新措施：如果一個帳號在整個帳號歷史中第一次發佈關於加密貨幣（cryptocurrency）的貼文，就會自動鎖定帳號並要求驗證。」
痛批 Google 毫無作為，縱容釣魚郵件
駭客的作案手法通常是廣發釣魚電子郵件，偽裝成「你的錢包被駭」或官方警告，誘導受害者點擊惡意連結以竊取社群帳號權限。一旦得手，他們便會利用這些原本與加密貨幣毫無關聯、卻有一定粉絲基礎的帳號，迅速推廣假加密貨幣項目以牟取暴利。
對此，Nikita Bier 直言不諱地將部分責任歸咎於電子郵件服務巨頭，他在回覆中猛烈抨擊：
「這項新制應該能消滅 99% 的（駭客盜號）誘因，尤其是因為 Google 完全沒有在阻止這些釣魚郵件。」
