Walmart is expanding its drone delivery service to 150 locations.

Alphabet’s Wing drone delivery service is rapidly expanding its partnership with Walmart. This expansion offers significant growth opportunities in a relatively short period and demonstrates the viability of commercial drone technology. On Friday, the two companies announced plans to add 150 new Walmart locations to the drone service network.

How is the drone service developing step by step?

Building on success in the Dallas-Fort Worth and Atlanta areas, this drone delivery expansion will be carried out gradually throughout the year and will continue until the end of 2027. According to Wing’s recently appointed Chief Business Officer Heather Rivera, drone services are expected to expand to cities like Houston, Orlando, Tampa, and Charlotte by June 2025. Rivera confirmed that drone operations in Houston will begin on January 15.

This phased development shows Wing’s strategy to initially test its drone technology and operational capabilities. The company recently conducted its first commercial flights using a large drone capable of carrying up to five pounds, indicating an expansion of its problem-solving capabilities.

Most demanded products via drone service

Among the most popular products delivered by drone are eggs, premium meats, tomatoes, avocados, limes, Lunchables, and Takis snacks. Rivera emphasized that active users utilize the drone service up to three times a week, indicating steady demand for drone deliveries.

Over 270 stores will use drone delivery by the end of 2027

Once fully expanded, Wing will operate drone services at over 270 Walmart stores, covering cities like Los Angeles, St. Louis, Cincinnati, and Miami. This scale will include about 10% of the US population, positioning Wing as a leading player in the commercial drone industry.

Wing began its partnership with Walmart in 2023, initially conducting pilot programs at two stores in the Dallas area, reaching approximately 60,000 households. Since then, drone services have rapidly expanded to 18 Walmart Supercenters in Dallas-Fort Worth and now include locations in Atlanta.

Development trajectory of Wing’s drone technology

Wing’s business model is built around directly integrating drone services with Walmart’s existing operations. The company also collaborates with DoorDash, but its primary commercial focus remains on the Walmart partnership, ensuring a dedicated niche for its drone delivery services.

The use of a large drone capable of carrying up to five pounds this year demonstrates technological progress. Various strategies are being employed for expansion, including the successful testing of opening multiple stores simultaneously (such as the six-store pilot in Atlanta).

Rivera added that increasing delivery volume has played a key role in their drone business model. “My main task here is to develop the drone delivery service, and I am passionate about it,” she said.

This initiative by Alphabet’s subsidiary is currently delivering food, pharmaceuticals, and desired products via drone in various cities, demonstrating the potential of drone delivery to transform local logistics.
