Charles Hoskinson announces the launch of Midnight, Cardano's private blockchain, by the end of March
The founder of Input Output Global (IOG), Charles Hoskinson, revealed that Midnight, the highly anticipated privacy-focused blockchain, will debut during the last week of March as a partner chain to Cardano. The announcement was made during his keynote speech at Consensus Hong Kong, marking a significant milestone in IOG’s efforts to integrate data protection and regulatory compliance into decentralized systems.
Charles Hoskinson’s Plans to Bring Privacy to Cardano with Midnight
Charles Hoskinson’s proposal aims to solve a fundamental challenge in blockchain: how to enable private transactions without compromising verifiability. Midnight operates as a sidechain of Cardano, providing a dedicated layer for applications that require privacy and regulatory compliance. This architecture allows developers to build on Cardano’s robustness while leveraging Midnight’s confidentiality capabilities.
During his presentation in Hong Kong, Charles Hoskinson highlighted strategic collaborations supporting this project. “Google and Telegram are two of our main partners on this journey,” the founder stated. “We’re excited about what’s coming next. These alliances reflect the trust of leading companies in Midnight’s vision.”
How Does Midnight Work? Zero-Knowledge Proofs and Selective Disclosure
Midnight uses zero-knowledge proofs (ZK) to implement what is known as “rational privacy.” This mechanism functions like an intelligent filter for blockchain data: users keep their transactions private by default but can share specific information with authorized parties when necessary.
The platform implements multiple levels of disclosure, categorized as public view, auditor view, and full view (god view), each with different access permissions. This structure balances the need for confidentiality with regulatory requirements, allowing transactions to remain hidden from the public while providing transparency to auditors and authorities when appropriate.
Midnight’s selective disclosure mechanism represents an advance in how blockchains can handle privacy without sacrificing regulatory oversight—a balance that Charles Hoskinson considers crucial for enterprise adoption.
Midnight City Simulation: Preparing the Network for the Real World
To validate Midnight’s ability to operate under real-world demand, IOG introduced the Midnight City Simulation, an interactive platform that simulates network behavior under high-volume conditions. Although the simulation was activated on February 26 at midnight.city, public access will remain restricted until that same date, according to IOG’s announcements. Once open to the public, the platform will allow users and developers to directly experience how Midnight manages scalable privacy in production-like conditions.
This testing period is essential to demonstrate that Midnight is truly ready for real-world deployment, beyond technical specifications. The ability to continuously generate and process cryptographic proofs under real loads is a key requirement before mainnet launch.
