What is Polkadot?

Polkadot (DOT) is a Layer-0 blockchain protocol founded by Ethereum co-founder Gavin Wood, designed to enable interoperability between different blockchains . Its architecture features a central Relay Chain connecting multiple parallel blockchains (parachains), allowing them to share security and transfer data seamlessly . DOT serves three core functions: governance participation, network bonding, and staking for security . Approximately 52% of all DOT tokens are currently staked, demonstrating strong holder conviction .

Major 2026 Transformation

Polkadot is undergoing a historic economic shift on March 14, 2026 ("Pi Day"), implementing a hard cap of 2.1 billion DOT to transition from inflation to scarcity . Annual issuance will drop by approximately 52.6%, reducing inflation from 7.5% to about 3.11% . Staking upgrades include slashing protection for nominators and unbonding periods shortened from 28 days to 24-48 hours . Currently trading near $1.36, these changes aim to position DOT as a more mature, institutional-grade asset .
