Dramatic Increase in Solar Power on the Continent – Behind the 54% Growth

In 2025, Africa added nearly 4.5 gigawatts of new solar capacity. This figure represents a 54% increase compared to the previous year and surpasses the record set in 2023. Strong investments in utility-scale projects have been the main driver of this growth. Experts note that the continent’s solar infrastructure is being prepared to meet future energy demands.

South Africa Leads: Country-by-Country Differences

Looking at the leading positions within the region, South Africa continues to hold a strong position with an installed capacity of 1.6 gigawatts. Nigeria has stabilized in second place with 803 megawatts, while Egypt ranks third with 500 megawatts. These figures demonstrate the varying levels of interest among different countries in developing solar energy.

Toward 2029: Wide Expansion of Solar Energy Expected

If the current growth rate is maintained, Africa’s annual solar capacity may not exceed 33 gigawatts by 2029. The Global Solar Council also forecasts that distributed energy systems and user-scale markets will expand simultaneously in many new countries. This trend signals a fundamental revolution in the continent’s energy sector.
