South Korea’s Gwangju District Prosecutors’ Office reported that a tranche of seized bitcoin went missing after staff mistakenly interacted with a fraudulent site.

The loss surfaced during a periodic inspection of seized financial assets, the report said. An official described access credentials being stored on a USB device, and said the office is still verifying the amount involved. The report cited internal estimates putting the value in the “tens of billions of won,” with one figure referenced at about 70 billion won.

Prosecutors told the outlet they could not yet confirm specific details and are continuing to investigate what happened and how the breach occurred. Stakeholders will watch for follow-up disclosures and whether prosecutors tighten custody controls, device hygiene, and audit procedures for digital-asset holdings.
