Don't remind me again today

Someone raised a fascinating point about Lighter's operational costs as a zk-rollup. Worth digging into.

Every rollup has to settle data on Ethereum's base layer—that's non-negotiable. But here's the catch: when L1 gas fees explode, it directly eats into Layer 2 profit margins. We're talking potential squeeze scenarios.

For zk-based solutions like Lighter, those settlement costs aren't trivial. They're posting proofs and transaction batches constantly. If Ethereum's fee market goes parabolic again (remember 2021?), smaller rollups might feel the pinch harder than established players with better capital buffers.

Anyone tracking these metrics long-term? The sustainability math gets sketchy when base layer costs 10x overnight.

To be honest, this issue hits the nail on the head... small rollups really can't handle the L1 fees big pump, and that little profit margin disappears in an instant.

hypothesis: the gas fee dependency creates this weird feudal dynamic where smaller rollups become vassal states to L1 validators... bridging the gap between scalability dreams and hard economics is the real bottleneck tbh

To be honest, this idea hit me... Lighter, this small rollup really can't withstand the big pump in gas fees, aren't there many projects crushed during that wave in 2009?
