Vitalik: L2 and execution sharding have the same underlying scalability method, but attention needs to be paid to key challenges such as coordination.

Odaily Planet Daily News Vitalik Buterin today published an article titled "How do layer 2s really differ from _ution sharding?", in which he mentioned that in public discourse, "Layer 2" and "sharding" are often described as two opposite strategies for scaling blockchain. However, when you look at the underlying technology, you will find a puzzle: the actual underlying scaling methods are exactly the same. You have some data sharding. You have fraud proof or ZK-SNARK proof. You have solutions for cross (rollup, shard) communication. The main difference is: who is responsible for building and updating these parts, and how much autonomy do they have? In an L2-centric ecosystem, the concept of sharding in a very technical sense is realized. In this form of sharding, you can create your own shards using your own rules. This is powerful and supports a great deal of creativity and independent innovation. However, it also faces key challenges, particularly in terms of coordination. For L2-centric ecosystems like Ethereum to succeed, they need to understand these challenges and address them head-on in order to maximize the benefits of an L1-centric ecosystem and achieve the best of both worlds.
