Opinion: Trump aims to influence the situation by exploiting the divide between the Iranian president and the military

BlockBeatNews

BlockBeats message, April 1. Trump earlier said, “The new Iranian regime’s president has just asked the United States for a ceasefire.” Analysts said in response that Pezeshkian has been the president of Iran since before the conflict; he is still the incumbent. The key issue is that it is still unclear whether he truly holds power or whether he once did. The president of Iran is typically a symbolic role, responsible for the government’s civilian affairs, and policies require approval from the Supreme Leader and the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps. Recent signs increasingly suggest there is a rift between the president and the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps. Trump’s strategy appears to be to exploit this split: by having the president send peace signals to the Iranian people in one direction, while claiming that the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps is an obstacle to negotiations. This could trigger internal turmoil and ultimately may lead to a change of regime, or at least bring an unstable situation.
