o1Labs 2025 Roadmap: Developing ZK Technology and Solving Web3 Technical Challenges

Since 2017, o1Labs has successively released zkApps and utility tools such as o1js and Kimchi, continuously leading the transformation of the Mina ecosystem. Recently, o1Labs officially released the 2025 roadmap developed in collaboration with the Mina community.

o1Labs not only continues to pay attention to the development of all aspects of the Mina ecosystem, but also is an important builder of Mina Protocol. Since 2017, the o1Labs team has been at the forefront of designing Mina Protocol and developing zkApps tools. From the launch of the Mina mainnet in 2021 to the launch of zkApps earlier this year, the team has been driving the development of zero-knowledge cryptography.

In addition to the Mina Protocol, o1Labs also develops and maintains o1js (our TypeScript library for zk-SNARKs and zkApps) and Kimchi (a modular, general-purpose zero-knowledge proof system based on PLONK). Whether you are a zkApp developer, a node operator, or a project founder, your feedback brings us closer to our shared vision: an internet where developers use programmable cryptography to create more powerful, trustless applications.

Today, we are excited to share our 2025 roadmap with everyone. This roadmap captures the many feedbacks received from the Mina community and outlines how we will gradually achieve various tasks at different levels, bringing us closer to Mina's ultimate goal. Although the roadmap is merely a simplification and snapshot of o1Labs' future tasks, we also hope the community understands our clear direction and provides us with more feedback and optimization proposals in the process of co-iteration.

The toolkit needed for Mina developers to create the next generation of zkApps

One of o1Labs' top priorities is to ensure that zkApp developers can build the applications they envision with a complete set of tools, which includes a comprehensive overhaul of the API to restructure o1js, as well as providing robust documentation, tutorials, and example applications. Additionally, the team is developing o1VM and bringing new features to zkApp developers.

Continuously improving the performance of Mina is key to optimizing a seamless experience for users and developers. In 2025, o1Labs will focus on shortening slot times to enhance transaction processing speed, optimizing node operation and maintenance, and applying cutting-edge Folding technology throughout the network to improve scalability, which will help optimize the performance of the Mina network and meet the fundamental needs of ecological expansion.

Solving the State Management Challenge in the Web3 Space

State management remains a key challenge faced by Mina and the broader blockchain space. To address this issue, o1Labs has introduced an innovative approach to managing application state. This project aims to redefine the way data is stored, updated, and verified in the decentralized domain. Check out the related blog to learn more about our vision for state management.

The roadmap is divided into three parts: "Now", "Next Step", and "Later". Although not all listed items can be completed by the end of 2025, these categories clearly define the work priorities for o1Labs in the next phase.

• Now: Projects that are currently ongoing or about to be delivered
• Next step: Current focus of planned work
• In the future: Projects that have a significant impact but cannot be immediately developed due to current capacity limitations will have a higher priority in the subsequent construction process.

In addition, our roadmap reflects how our engineering team is organized by user groups. Each focus area aligns with the specific needs of Mina's contributors (zkApp developers, node operators, application cryptographers, etc.). By building our work in this way, we aim to provide our community with tailored, high-impact improvements.
