The Worldcoin Foundation said in a statement that service was suspended "out of an abundance of caution and in an effort to reduce crowd numbers."

Kenya’s Interior Ministry said in a statement yesterday that Worldcoin’s activities in the country have been suspended until the risks posed by the project can be assessed.

Worldcoin, the identity-focused cryptocurrency project co-founded by Sam Altman, confirmed that it** has temporarily suspended its services in Kenya after being notified of the suspension yesterday. **

Kenya has been a key market for the project, which uses spherical devices to scan people's irises to help prove their uniqueness online and offers a new cryptocurrency, WLD, as an incentive.

A spokesperson for the Worldcoin Foundation said demand for its verification services in Kenya was “overwhelming,” with tens of thousands of people queuing over two days to obtain a World ID.

“Out of an abundance of caution and to reduce crowd numbers, verification services have been suspended,” they said. “During the suspension, the team will develop an onboarding plan that includes stronger crowd control measures and will Working with local officials to increase understanding of the privacy measures and commitments Worldcoin implements, not only in Kenya but around the world."

It was previously reported that as of December 2022, Worldcoin has registered more than 250,000 people in Nairobi. Reports in local media in recent days have suggested that authorities dispersed thousands of people queuing at the Kenyatta International Conference Center in Nairobi.

A Worldcoin spokesperson stated that **Worldcoin will work with regulators and other stakeholders to restore services in Kenya. **

Token Issuance and Global Review

Worldcoin's token, WLD, was launched last week. At the time, the program had more than 2 million signups, most of them in countries in the southern hemisphere. According to CoinGecko data, the WLD token is currently trading at $2.34.

The project has not only attracted the interest of the Kenyan authorities. ** The Bavarian State Data Protection Supervisory Office has been investigating Worldcoin since last year, concerned that sensitive data could be used. **

In Kenya, Worldcoin has partnered with the city and county of Nairobi and is a member of the Kenya Blockchain Association, the American Chamber of Commerce in Kenya and SafariDAO, according to a person familiar with the matter.

There seems to be some debate among Kenyan politicians about the status of Worldcoin. On Aug. 2, the same day the suspension notice was issued, Eliud Owlao, Cabinet Secretary for ICT and Digital Economy, said Worldcoin had been operating legally in the country and had previously sought a license.
