"Threatens to Delay China Visit" Trump and US Treasury Secretary Publicly Clarify - White House Press Secretary: President Looks Forward to China Visit, Dates May Be Adjusted
According to CCTV International News, the UK Financial Times reported on March 16 that U.S. President Trump “threatened to delay his visit to China over the issue of ensuring the safety of navigation through the Strait of Hormuz.” In response, U.S. Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin, White House Press Secretary Kayleigh McEnany, and President Trump himself all publicly clarified the matter on the same day.
On March 16, local time, U.S. Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin told CNBC that if President Trump’s meeting with Chinese leaders is postponed, it is not because Trump requested China to maintain the safety of the Strait of Hormuz. The report is completely false. If the meeting is rescheduled, it will be due to logistical reasons. President Trump prefers to stay in Washington to coordinate war efforts, and traveling at this time may not be the best choice.
White House Press Secretary Kayleigh McEnany told reporters that President Trump looks forward to visiting China, but the date may be adjusted. Trump’s current top priority is to ensure the continued success of Operation Epic Fury. She does not believe the visit to China will be canceled, but it is very likely to be delayed.
On March 16, Foreign Ministry spokesperson Wang Wenbin held a routine press conference.
When asked about high-level exchanges between China and the U.S., Wang Wenbin stated that summit diplomacy plays an irreplaceable strategic leading role in China-U.S. relations, and both sides are maintaining communication regarding President Trump’s visit to China.
