How to increase your chances of successfully purchasing tickets? Here's a must-have guide for 12306 ticket buying
“How to Increase Standby Success Rate?”
“How far in advance is it necessary to change tickets?”
“How is the refund fee calculated?”
…
During the Spring Festival travel season
Many travelers have questions about ticket purchasing:
Whether you plan to return to work, go on a trip,
or go back to school,
Today, here is a practical guide for railway 12306 ticket purchasing,
to make your travel planning more confident.
Ticket Allocation Principles
The railway authorities organize train services based on the principles of “reasonable division of long- and short-distance trains, with originating stations considering intermediate stations,” mainly to meet the needs of medium- and long-distance travelers.
Long-distance Priority: Most ticket quotas are allocated to originating stations or nearby stations, prioritizing travelers traveling full distance or longer distances.
Short- and medium-distance: Through pre-allocation and dynamic adjustments, a certain number of tickets are allocated to stations along the route to meet short- and medium-distance travel needs, reflecting fairness and justice.
Note: The railway department recommends travelers with short-distance travel needs to choose short-distance trains whenever possible. If long-distance trains are necessary and tickets are unavailable on the segment, you can promptly use the standby ticket feature, maximizing the use of up to 60 “date + train number” combinations.
Example: Xiao Li plans to take train D903 from Beijing to Guangzhou on March 1. On February 20, Xiao Li purchased a ticket via the Railway 12306 app. The system shows no tickets for this segment, but there are remaining tickets from Beijing West to Shenzhen North. Xiao Li did not choose “buy long, travel short,” but added a standby order, which was successfully fulfilled on February 27.
Besides standby tickets, travelers can also choose transfer options on the Railway 12306 app. The system will intelligently recommend various transfer plans such as “same city transfer,” “same station transfer,” or “same train seat change,” based on travel needs and remaining tickets.
Standby Ticket Service
When your preferred train or seat class is sold out, please use the official Railway 12306 standby feature immediately, as it is the most reliable supplementary ticketing channel.
Before tickets go on sale, you can pre-fill passenger information and set reminders based on the ticket sale time to submit your order promptly.
Make good use of the “snatch” strategy: standby is the best approach, and you can also monitor for ticket releases a few days before departure.
Each passenger can hold up to 6 pending fulfillment standby orders, with each order supporting up to 19 passengers, and selecting any 3 travel dates, totaling no more than 60 train options, with no limit on seat classes. If you choose to accept additional trains, your chances of success will further increase.
The railway will add temporary trains during peak periods based on passenger flow. Selecting this option will prioritize the ticket allocation for passengers with pending standby orders.
Note: The deadline for fulfilling standby orders can be set as late as 20 minutes before departure, giving passengers maximum waiting time. Please stay updated on the fulfillment results.
When standby, try to add the target train, adjacent time slots (such as 1-2 hours earlier or later), other trains in the same direction, and different seat classes (such as second class, first class) to the same standby order to improve success rates.
Example: Xiao Wang planned to travel from Nanning to Guangzhou on March 1, but the tickets for his preferred train were sold out. He added standby tickets for 6 trains on that day, selected all seat classes and travel times, expanded the selection range to the maximum, and checked “accept additional trains,” setting the fulfillment deadline to “6 hours before departure.” About 10 hours before departure, his tickets were successfully issued.
Refund and Change Rules
Unexpected changes, schedule conflicts, or mistaken ticket purchases… It’s inevitable to encounter situations requiring a refund during travel. Want to quickly refund close to departure? Here is a refund guide:
Free Refunds
If you purchased the ticket by mistake within 30 minutes of payment and more than 4 hours before departure, you can process a refund online without any fee. A traveler can only do one free refund per natural day for mistaken purchases. This does not apply to change, reservation, or standby tickets.
Refund Fee Standard
Important: For tickets changed or altered to a different station during the Spring Festival travel period, the refund fee will be 20% of the ticket face value.
Example: Xiao Zhang bought a ticket at 13:30 on March 2 for a train departing at 20:00 the same day. After 15 minutes, he realized he entered the wrong information. Since the ticket was not a reservation or standby ticket and there was more than 4 hours before departure, Xiao Zhang successfully refunded the ticket free of charge within 30 minutes of payment.
If you do not want to cancel your trip but just want to change the time or train, do not blindly refund. Changing the ticket is a more secure option.
Change Rules
Under the condition that the railway transportation capacity allows, a ticket can be changed once:
For station changes, the change must be made at least 48 hours before departure. If the original ticket includes checked luggage, luggage change or cancellation must also be processed.
Key point: Refunds terminate the trip, while changes modify the trip. Whether you want to switch trains before departure or correct a missed train on the day, there are corresponding change options.
Example: Xiao Li wanted to change his ticket for a trip at 7:00 on March 1, but it was less than 48 hours before departure. According to regulations, he could change to a train before 24:00 on March 1 for free, or change to trains within the pre-sale period on March 2 or later, with a change fee.
Use Official Channels
Be sure to purchase tickets through the official Railway 12306 website or app to avoid personal information leaks and financial losses.
Authoritative and reliable: the only official ticketing platform, with real-time accurate data.
Comprehensive functions: supports ticket purchase, refund, change, standby, and all related services.
Plan ahead: ticket pre-sale period is 15 days (including the current day). Please check the sale start time in advance and plan your trip accordingly.
