The Ufa Court in Russia recently rendered a verdict in a Bitcoin theft case: a former traffic police officer was sentenced to 7 years of supervised detention for abusing his authority to illegally access the phones of detainees and subsequently steal approximately 20 million rubles (equivalent to tens of thousands of dollars) worth of Bitcoin assets.

Details of the case are noteworthy. The crime occurred in 2022, when the involved officer crossed the line of law enforcement—directly gaining access to the phones of two detainees. He then transferred funds via encrypted messaging apps to their wallets. More seriously, the entire process involved violent evidence collection, escalating the original "abuse of power" into a "criminal offense."

The court's verdict includes two parts: a 7-year supervised detention sentence and civil liability to compensate the victim with about 20 million rubles. This case serves as a warning— even law enforcement officers with public authority may cross legal boundaries when tempted by crypto assets. For users holding Bitcoin and other digital assets, it is a reminder: properly safeguarding private keys, being vigilant against abuse of power, and choosing secure storage solutions are crucial for asset protection.

As the crypto market expands, similar security threats will not disappear but may diversify. The severity of this Russian case's punishment may serve as a reference for global law enforcement—acts of abusing authority to steal crypto assets should be treated with the same seriousness.

The police are even willing to take action, so we ordinary people need to be more careful... It's safer to use a cold wallet.

Even the police dare to move? Now it's better, we must keep our coins safe ourselves. Let's go with hardware wallets.

The police are starting to seize coins too. These days, it's really something... I need to memorize my private key quickly and not let anyone touch my phone.
