Yesterday We Transferred and It Happened: Ethereum Developers Announced!
Ethereum developers have decided to postpone the eagerly awaited Pectra upgrade following the issues encountered during testing on the network's primary testnets Holesky and Sepolia.
The decision was made on Thursday, March 6 during a developer call after two test runs revealed misconfigurations and required further testing before the upgrade was rolled out on the Ethereum mainnet.
Positioned as the most important upgrade for Ethereum since 2024, Pectra aims to increase transaction speeds and ease of use for both users and operators. Initially, developers planned to finalize a mainnet launch date for Pectra during the meeting on March 6. However, the encountered issues led to a consensus that additional tests were needed.
Despite attributing errors more to incorrect configurations in the test environment rather than fundamental flaws in Pectra itself, developers chose to be cautious. Normally, successful tests on Holesky and Sepolia would have been sufficient for the mainnet launch decision, but the disruptions led to a change in strategy.
Alex Stokes, a researcher at the Ethereum Foundation and the one leading today's meeting, said, "We need more information before setting a specific date."
To fix the test failures, developers are planning to create a 'shadow fork' of the previous Pectra test network, which has not been working since the Holesky test. Misconfigurations caused a significant portion of Holesky's validators to go offline and the network to fail to process transactions properly.
Shadow fork serves as a temporary copy of a blockchain network, allowing developers, staking pools, and application creators to test Pectra without relying on the main Holesky test network. According to Stokes, 'Anyone who wants to test on Holesky can test on this network.'
By the way, developers continue their efforts to restore the primary Holesky network to its former state, which requires 67% of validators to restructure their systems. Developers expect Holesky to be fully operational by March 28, at which point further decisions regarding Pectra's mainnet distribution are anticipated.
