El Salvador Bitcoin fourth anniversary, buying 21 BTC to celebrate

El Salvador ( became the first country in the world to adopt Bitcoin as legal tender in September 2021. Despite opposition from the International Monetary Fund ) IMF(, the government is still celebrating its fourth anniversary in a high-profile manner today, with President Nayib Bukele announcing the purchase of 21 BTC to mark the occasion.

Bitcoin strategy strongly opposed by the IMF, El Salvador promises to adjust

El Salvador became the world's first country to adopt Bitcoin as legal tender in September 2021, facing strong opposition from the IMF, which cited risks to financial stability and integrity. The IMF has repeatedly called on El Salvador to strengthen its regulatory framework and oversight of the national Bitcoin ecosystem.

At the end of last year, El Salvador reached an agreement with the IMF on a $1.4 billion loan plan, which will also facilitate additional financial support from the World Bank, the Inter-American Development Bank, and other regional development banks, with a total financing plan exceeding $3.5 billion throughout the program. The condition is that El Salvador must make significant adjustments to its Bitcoin strategy.

Bought 21 Bitcoins to celebrate, holding a value of over 700 million USD.

However, promises aside, since the loan has been received, El Salvador seems to continue its Bitcoin dollar-cost averaging plan. President Nayib Bukele announced El Salvador's "national wallet" last March, stating that 1 Bitcoin would be invested daily. On the fourth anniversary, an additional 21 Bitcoins were purchased to celebrate. El Salvador currently owns 6,313 Bitcoins, worth over 700 million dollars.

The Bitcoin office has uploaded several photos of Bitcoin-themed installations inside the National Library of El Salvador )BINAES(, decorating the existing bookshelves with Bitcoin themes, highlighting the cultural role of Bitcoin.
