The Czech Republic appoints a new minister after a $45 million Bitcoin scandal.
The Prime Minister of the Czech Republic, Petr Fiala, has appointed Eva Decroix as the new Minister of Justice, replacing Pavel Blažek after a prolonged controversy over a Bitcoin donation worth 45 million USD from Tomáš Jirčovský, a convicted criminal. Blažek has been criticized for accepting this payment on behalf of the state, leading to pressure for him to resign and leave the Civic Democratic Party.
Fiala emphasized the importance of restoring public trust and has instructed Decroix to conduct an independent audit related to the donations. The scandal comes in the context of the upcoming national elections in October, with the opposition party ANO led by former Prime Minister Andrej Babiš criticizing the government. Decroix must quickly stabilize the ministry's reputation before this crucial election.
