A man in the United States was sentenced to prison for using Bitcoin and other virtual money to purchase and allegedly sell cocaine.
PANews, May 31 - According to the official website of the U.S. Department of Justice, federal prosecutors announced that 43-year-old Corey Robert Dodge (also known as Cakesbaylor) from Buffalo, New York, was sentenced to 41 months in prison for possessing 15 or more unauthorized access devices with intent to commit fraud and for possessing cocaine with intent to distribute. Additionally, Corey Robert Dodge was ordered to forfeit his criminal proceeds of $27,000. Since August 2018, the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) has been investigating an illegal online marketplace called “Genesis Market.” The operators of this marketplace collect stolen data from computers infected with malware worldwide, such as computer and mobile device identifiers, email addresses, usernames, and passwords, and package it for sale. Purchases made through “Genesis Market” use virtual currencies like Bitcoin. From March 26, 2020, to May 30, 2021, Corey Robert Dodge purchased 14 packages on the Genesis Market, which contained stolen account credentials. Additionally, during the search, the FBI also discovered and seized a large amount of fentanyl, cocaine, and other substances.
