I just found out that spring has recently started in the United States, and I was surprised to learn how long it actually lasts. It turns out it lasts nearly three months, specifically 92 days and 17 hours. The equinox was on March 20 at 10:46 AM Eastern Time, when the Sun crosses the celestial equator. Since then, the days have been getting longer and temperatures gradually rising.
What's interesting is that spring doesn't have a fixed date each year. Apparently, the astronomical year lasts 365 days and six hours, but the Gregorian calendar only counts 365 days, so that difference is compensated with leap years. That's why the equinox shifts by a few minutes each year, and spring can start on March 19, 20, or 21 depending on the time zone.
Now that I think about it, a lot happens in nature during this season. Plants bloom, trees regain their leaves, animals start their reproductive or migration cycles. And it’s noticeable in our lives too, because we all want to go out more and enjoy the weather. Spring ends on June 20 when summer begins. Honestly, it’s fascinating how the solar system regulates all of this.
