Australia has just announced the National Artificial Intelligence Strategy (AI), withdrawing from the previous strict regulations on high-risk AI applications. Currently, Australia does not have specific AI laws, and the government will rely on existing laws to manage risks instead of enacting new legislation.

The plan focuses on three objectives: attracting investment for advanced data centers, developing AI skills to protect jobs, and ensuring public safety as AI becomes part of daily life. Government agencies will be responsible for managing risks in their respective areas.

The government also plans to establish an AI Safety Institute in 2026 to monitor and respond to new risks. Minister of Industry Tim Ayres emphasized the balance between innovation and risk management. However, experts warn that the roadmap lacks elements of accountability, sovereignty, and democratic oversight, which could impact the fairness and reliability of the AI economy.
