Ethereum Foundation is committed to donating an additional 500,000 dollars to support Roman Storm's legal battle.
The Ethereum Foundation has committed to matching grants of up to 500,000 USD for the legal defense fund of Roman Storm, co-founder of Tornado Cash. Previously, a jury in New York concluded that Storm was guilty of operating an unlicensed money transfer service, but has not yet reached a verdict on the charges of money laundering and sanction violations. Storm denies all accusations, and the legal team is preparing an appeal.
The Free Pertsev & Storm organization stated that Storm could face 5 years in prison if they lose the lawsuit, and even decades if retried. Ethereum and the cryptocurrency community have voiced their support for Storm, arguing that writing software for a non-custodial protocol does not equate to money laundering. Vitalik Buterin has also shared an article asserting that "privacy is normal and coding is not a crime."
