Former US Senator Accused of Taking Bribe Saying El Salvador Is Laundering Money with Bitcoin - Coin Bulletin
Former US Senator Bob Menendez has been sentenced to 11 years in prison for bribery and acting as an agent on behalf of Egypt.
Democrat Bob Menendez, who served in the US Senate representing the state of New Jersey and is known for his strong stance against cryptocurrencies, has been convicted of bribery charges. Menendez, who was tried and found guilty last year, was sentenced to 11 years in prison on Wednesday.
Tough Stance Against Bitcoin
Menendez, especially known for his anti-Bitcoin views. During his tenure in the U.S. Senate, he claimed that Bitcoin was an "ideal tool" for criminals and opposed El Salvador's adoption of BTC as a legal tender. In 2021, he even prepared a bill to pressure El Salvador.
However, Menendez himself was convicted of taking bribes using his political power. According to court documents, Menendez received gold and cash bribes and acted as a political agent on behalf of Egypt. Judge Sidney H. Stein, who announced the decision, used the words “You were at the top of our political system, but at some point, you lost your way and put your own interests ahead of the public good.”
( Reference from Nayib Bukele to Menendez
El Salvador President Nayib Bukele also commented on Menendez's conviction. In a post on the social media platform Twitter, Bukele referred to Menendez, saying, "This senator was one of the biggest critics claiming that El Salvador used Bitcoin for money laundering and corruption. But it seems that he was the real culprit."
Menendez's conviction, seen as a significant case against political corruption in the US, has also caused a great stir among cryptocurrency supporters. In particular, the conviction of a politician known for being anti-Bitcoin for corruption is considered an ironic situation in the crypto community.
