Ministry of Commerce: Expresses serious concern over Mexico's possible implementation of a so-called "economic security review" on Chinese investments.
Xinhua News Agency, Beijing, March 20 (Reporter Xie Xiyao) - A spokesperson for the Ministry of Commerce stated on the 20th that China has repeatedly urged Mexico to correct its erroneous practice of unilaterally increasing tariffs, and expressed serious concern over Mexico’s potential “economic security review” of Chinese investments.
A reporter asked: According to local media reports in Mexico, a senior official from the Mexican Ministry of Economy stated in an interview that the U.S. has accused Mexico of being a “springboard” for Asian goods to enter the U.S. market, and welcomes Mexico’s imposition of tariffs on products such as automobiles and steel imported from non-free trade partners. Mexico is considering conducting an “economic security review” of Chinese investments. What is the Ministry of Commerce’s comment on this?
The spokesperson stated that China has taken note of the relevant comments made by the senior official of the Mexican Ministry of Economy. China has consistently opposed all forms of unilateralism and protectionism, and opposes politicizing, weaponizing, or using trade issues as tools. China has repeatedly urged Mexico to correct its erroneous practice of unilaterally increasing tariffs and has expressed serious concern over Mexico’s potential “economic security review” of Chinese investments. On September 25, 2025, the Ministry of Commerce initiated an investigation into trade and investment barriers related to Mexico’s restrictions on China, and will soon announce the final conclusion of the investigation, taking appropriate measures in due course to firmly safeguard China’s legitimate rights and interests.
The spokesperson said that mutual respect and win-win cooperation are valuable experiences in the development of China-Mexico economic and trade relations, and the normal development of bilateral economic and trade relations requires both sides to move toward each other. China is willing to strengthen communication and exchanges with Mexico, properly manage differences, and jointly maintain the overall situation of bilateral economic and trade relations. It is hoped that Mexico will view economic and trade cooperation with China rationally, objectively, and comprehensively, respect market rules and principles of fair competition, and provide an open, fair, and predictable environment for enterprises from all countries, including Chinese companies.
