China's electricity generation increase reaches 7 times that of the United States, influencing AI competition.
China is catching up to the U.S. in power generation capacity enhancements surrounding artificial intelligence (AI) research and development. The increase in China’s power generation capacity by 2025 is expected to reach seven times that of the U.S. China is using low-cost electricity as a weapon to compensate for the inferiority of its semiconductor performance compared to the U.S. The capacity of power supply has the potential to influence the AI competition between China and the U.S.
Forecasts released by the Chinese government in December 2025 indicate that the power generation capacity from newly built power plants will be approximately 470 gigawatts. Data from the U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA) shows that the U.S. will increase its power generation capacity by 64 gigawatts during the same period.
China’s power generation capacity surpassed that of the U.S. in 2013 and is projected to reach 2.5 times that of the U.S. by 2024. In terms of the increase in 2025, China also surpasses the U.S., further widening the gap between the two countries. The Chinese government expects that by 2030, power generation capacity will increase to 1.5 times that of 2024.
