The mounting tensions between U.S. President Trump, whose ambitions to acquire Greenland are growing more and more, and the eight European countries that have expressed opposition are increasing concerns that the situation could escalate into a tariff showdown. Speaking in an interview at the World Economic Forum (WEF) annual meeting (the Davos Forum) held in eastern Switzerland, Ian Bremmer, head of the U.S. research firm Eurasia Group, said that if Trump continues to apply pressure, NATO (the North Atlantic Treaty Organization) could be brought to an end. He also predicted that European countries, in order to counterbalance the United States, would shift strategic cooperation toward China. The interview is as follows.

Reporter: How do you view Trump’s demand for Greenland—could it lead to the collapse of NATO?

Ian Bremmer: If Trump continues to demand to obtain territory and does not back down, that would mean the end of NATO. However, this move is also very unpopular within the United States. The public doesn’t support it, and no legitimate reasons have been provided. This is based on Trump’s vanity and selfish behavior. If a country’s interests and the personal interests of the president diverge too sharply, it becomes a serious problem.

The Nikkei Business Publications and The Financial Times merged in November 2015 into the same media group. The alliance formed by the two newspaper companies in Japan and the UK, both founded in the 19th century, is advancing broad cooperation such as joint special features under the banner of “high-quality, the strongest economic journalism.” This time, as part of that effort, the two papers’ Chinese websites have implemented article exchanges.
