Former WTO Deputy Director-General Yi Xiaozhun: Beware of WTO reform being used to reverse globalization

【Caixin Net】 The United States has launched a tit-for-tat tariff battle aimed at the world, posing a threat of “life and death” to the multilateral trading system. Reform of the World Trade Organization (WTO) should rightly make resolving this issue its core agenda. At the “PKU Shenzhen Forum 2026,” held on March 28, former WTO Deputy Director-General, former Ambassador of China to the WTO, and former Vice Minister of Commerce Yi Xiaozhun put forward the view above.

Yi Xiaozhun said that for more than 70 years since the multilateral trading system was established, the overall direction of WTO reform has always been to advance trade liberalization and facilitation. But at this stage, with globalization “receding” and trade protectionism on the rise, WTO reform could be used by certain countries to promote trade protectionism and to “reverse course” on globalization.
