Ask AI: Is your dog’s homecoming instinct related to everyday companionship?

Recently, a story about seven domesticated dogs in Changchun, Jilin that were allegedly stolen and collectively escaped on the way, traveling together and successfully returning home after crossing 17 kilometers has drawn attention.

These seven dogs (including breeds such as German Shepherds, Golden Retrievers, and Corgis) come from the same village and usually play together in daily life. According to netizens, they were found near the Changshuang Expressway on March 16. At the time, they were moving collectively between streams of traffic, and later, another set of netizens captured footage of them walking through the fields.

On March 19, a volunteer involved in the search told The River News’ “See” reporter that the group of dogs had already safely returned to the village, and all of them have owners—coming from three different households. One dog owner said that what was lost from his home was a German Shepherd and a Golden Retriever. Fortunately, they were able to come back and weren’t eaten for dog meat by someone else.
