Optimism will implement a decade-long roadmap to strengthen the Superchain against quantum attacks
In a rare proactive move, Optimism announced an ambitious plan to defend the Superchain network against future quantum computing threats. This strategic transition will be implemented in coordinated phases over the next ten years, focusing on upgrading the entire ecosystem’s technological infrastructure.
A New Beginning: How the Gradual Transition from ECDSA Will Occur
The core issue is that most wallets and accounts on the Optimism network currently rely on ECDSA signatures, a cryptographic algorithm that could become vulnerable to hacking once quantum computers reach sufficient capability. Therefore, EOA transactions using ECDSA will be phased out gradually, with a deadline set for January 2036 to complete this transition.
This cautious timing reflects a strategy to balance giving users and developers enough time to adapt with securing the network before quantum computing poses a real threat.
Two-Phase Implementation: Account Abstraction at All Levels
At the first level, Account Abstraction technology, according to standards like EIP-7702, will enable existing wallets to gradually delegate signing authority to advanced smart accounts. These smart accounts will incorporate quantum-resistant signatures, ensuring seamless user access.
At the second level (protocol level), core components such as Sorters and Batch Submitters will be transitioned to quantum-resistant signatures. Optimism also calls on the Ethereum network itself to adopt a similar schedule for upgrading verifiers from BLS and KZG systems to quantum-safe alternatives.
The Road to 2036: Coordinating the Ecosystem for a Smooth Transition
Each phase of this ambitious plan will be coordinated through synchronized Hard Fork updates, giving the entire ecosystem—developers, users, and nodes—ample time to adapt gradually. Through this approach, Optimism sets a new standard in technological responsibility, addressing today’s security challenges to prepare for tomorrow’s threats.
