According to reports, Helion, a fusion startup backed by Sam Altman, is in early negotiations with OpenAI, also backed by Altman, to discuss selling electricity to it. This potential deal would secure OpenAI 12.5% of Helion's power generation, with a target of reaching 5 gigawatts by 2030 and 50 gigawatts by 2035. Previously, Helion reached a similar agreement with Microsoft in 2023. Helion's plan is to build 800 reactors before 2030 and an additional 7,200 reactors before 2035, with each reactor generating 50 megawatts of power, aiming to accomplish this goal before most competitors plan to achieve commercial operation in the early 2030s.
