Trump's Cybersecurity Strategy Places Cryptocurrencies on the National Security Agenda for the First Time
The Trump administration has made a historic shift in U.S. policy by explicitly including cryptocurrencies and blockchain technology in its new cyber strategy document. According to Alex Thorn, research director at Galaxy Research, this change marks the first time a U.S. national cybersecurity strategy clearly addresses these digital technologies, significantly differing from the Biden administration’s approach in 2023.
A seven-page defense framework with six main pillars
Titled “President Trump’s Cyber Strategy for America,” the document presents a defense structure based on six strategic pillars, primarily focusing on deterrence and response to cyberattacks. However, experts note that the proposal has significant limitations regarding specific implementation details, leaving questions about how the new directives will be executed in practice.
The novelty: protecting cryptocurrencies and blockchain
The most notable aspect of this cyber strategy is the explicit mention of the need to “protect and ensure the security” of cryptocurrencies and blockchain technology. This recognition marks a fundamental shift from previous strategies, which did not include these technologies in their defense frameworks. The inclusion reflects Washington’s growing emphasis on these digital assets within the national security infrastructure.
Crackdown on criminal infrastructure and unregulated channels
Alongside the protection proposal, the strategy also considers measures to suppress what it calls “criminal infrastructure.” It specifically emphasizes the need to “eliminate exit financial channels” and combat unauthorized deposit and withdrawal operations. Analysts warn that this wording could serve as a political basis for authorities to intensify crackdowns on cryptocurrency mixers, private coins, and unregulated exchanges.
Cyber offensive driven by artificial intelligence
The document complements its defensive approach with new executive provisions that expand permissions for offensive cyber operations against hostile networks. The strategy also plans to implement automated defense systems based on artificial intelligence, aiming to improve response capabilities against transnational threats. A new operational unit will be established within the National Coordination Center to carry out coordinated law enforcement operations against international cybercrime groups, mobilizing private sector resources.
Implications for the crypto ecosystem
This new cyber strategy presents a complex landscape for the cryptocurrency industry: on one hand, it recognizes the importance of protecting these assets; on the other, it provides political justification for more aggressive regulatory actions. Authorities could use this strategic foundation to intensify operations against unregulated infrastructures while simultaneously committing to safeguarding the sector’s overall security.
