During a recent Q&A session, OpenAI’s founder shared important insights about the future of artificial general intelligence (AGI) and the government’s role in its development. Sam Altman addressed critical questions about potential government interventions, offering a nuanced perspective on a topic that divides experts and policymakers.

Altman’s View on AGI Under Government Control

When asked about hypothetical scenarios where the U.S. government could take control of OpenAI or other AI projects, Altman acknowledged the complexity of the issue. While it’s impossible to predict the outcome of such events with certainty, he suggested that building AGI under government leadership might be appropriate in certain future circumstances. This statement reflects an openness to different governance models, depending on technological evolution and social needs.

Why Nationalizing OpenAI Isn’t Realistic

Despite this conceptual openness, Altman made clear that under the current development trajectory, government takeover of OpenAI remains highly unlikely. The path the company and the sector as a whole are on does not point to this scenario in the near future. This demonstrates confidence in the continuation of the private model, at least in the medium term, where AI companies remain under private leadership.

The Crucial Importance of Government-Industry Collaboration

The most emphasized point by Altman was the urgent need to establish strong partnerships between government entities and AI companies. He highlighted that close collaboration between these actors is “extremely important” for safe and responsible development. Many people, according to Altman, consider a high level of security to be certain, but they significantly underestimate the enormous financial and technical efforts invested to achieve these standards. Proper collaboration between the public and private sectors deserves greater recognition and understanding from society at large.
