Tomash Stanchak Leaves Position at Ethereum Foundation to Focus on Artificial Intelligence Development

The Ethereum Foundation is undergoing significant organizational transformations. Tomasz Stanczak, one of the executive directors of the organization, announced his resignation at the end of the month, passing his position to Bastiaan Auwe, an experienced member of the leadership team. This move reflects deeper changes in the foundation’s strategy and its efforts to adapt to new challenges within the ecosystem.

Strategic Reorientation: From Centralized Management to Coordination

Stanczak’s resignation tells an interesting story about the evolution of the Ethereum Foundation’s role. Less than a year prior, in March 2025, Tomasz Stanczak and Hsiao-Wei Wang were appointed as new co-CEOs, replacing the experienced Aya Miyaguchi. At that time, critics called for the foundation to adopt a more active approach to protocol development. However, over time, it became clear that different stakeholders within the ecosystem had conflicting expectations of such an institution’s role.

Miyaguchi and Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin, sitting on the Foundation’s board, insisted on adhering to the principle of decentralization. They viewed the Foundation’s role as coordinating developers rather than directly managing development. However, the market proved impatient: after Donald Trump was re-elected in the U.S., Ethereum’s price disappointed many investors, who blamed the organization for insufficient activity and disorganization.

Transformation Under Tomasz Stanczak’s Leadership

Under Stanczak and Wang, the Foundation radically changed its approach. The organization laid off 19 employees, shifted development focus from Layer 2 solutions to direct scaling of Ethereum itself. Additionally, the foundation launched a more aggressive PR campaign, including a series of social media videos aimed at popularizing blockchain.

Protocol update speeds accelerated. The foundation also initiated new research directions focused on critical challenges: protection against quantum computers, enhancing privacy, and most importantly, integrating artificial intelligence into the ecosystem.

Agent Systems as a New Frontier

The issue of artificial intelligence became a turning point for Stanczak. On his developmental path, he realized that agent systems and AI-supported recognition mechanisms are transforming the global tech landscape. In his blog, Tomasz wrote that he intends to continue working on Ethereum as a practicing product developer with a special focus on this area.

“The ecosystem has called on us to be faster and more organized,” Stanczak said during an exclusive interview last year. However, he also acknowledged that his own role within the foundation was gradually diminishing. The organization’s leaders gained confidence to make independent decisions and take on more responsibility. According to him, by 2026, his functions at the foundation will mainly be limited to passing the baton to the next generation of leaders.

DeFi and Security as Priorities

In the coming weeks, the Ethereum Foundation plans to publish several key proposals. These will include detailed recommendations for the development of decentralized finance (DeFi), coordination among developers in this field, and proposed roadmaps for further protocol improvements.

These initiatives reflect a new balance in the organization’s work: maintaining Ethereum’s decentralized nature while ensuring sufficient coordination to quickly address critical issues, from security to scalability.

Tomasz Stanczak Leaves a Legacy of Change

Hsiao-Wei Wang will remain in the role of another executive director, ensuring continuity of the strategic course. Bastiaan Auwe, as his successor, will be tasked with continuing the transformation initiated during Stanczak’s tenure. This appointment signals that the Ethereum Foundation aims to preserve the dynamism and adaptability that characterized its recent period under Tomasz and his colleagues.
