A reporter asked: According to local media in Mexico, a senior official from the Mexican Ministry of Economy stated in an interview that the U.S. has accused Mexico of being used as a “springboard” for Asian goods to be exported to the U.S., and is pleased to see Mexico imposing tariffs on imports such as automobiles and steel from non-free trade partners. Mexico is considering conducting an “economic security review” of Chinese investments. What is the Ministry of Commerce’s comment on this?

Answer: The Chinese side has noted the relevant remarks by the senior official of the Mexican Ministry of Economy. China has always opposed all forms of unilateralism and protectionism, and opposes politicizing, weaponizing, or instrumentalizing economic and trade issues. China has repeatedly urged Mexico to correct its mistaken practice of unilaterally increasing tariffs, and has expressed serious concern over Mexico’s possible “economic security review” of Chinese investments. On September 25, 2025, the Ministry of Commerce initiated a trade and investment barrier investigation into Mexico’s measures related to China. The final conclusions of the investigation will be announced soon, and appropriate measures will be taken in a timely manner to firmly safeguard China’s legitimate rights and interests.

Mutual respect and win-win cooperation are valuable experiences in the development of China-Mexico economic and trade relations. The normal development of bilateral economic and trade relations requires both sides to work together. China is willing to strengthen communication and coordination with Mexico, properly manage differences, and jointly maintain the overall stability of bilateral economic and trade relations. We hope Mexico will view China’s economic and trade cooperation rationally, objectively, and comprehensively, respect market rules and fair competition principles, and provide an open, fair, and predictable environment for enterprises from China and other countries.
