The Agriculture, Fisheries and Conservation Department (AFCD) yesterday evening seized two live Soba fish at a restaurant in Lok Fu, with an estimated market value of about HKD 17,000.

The AFCD had earlier received a complaint alleging that a restaurant in Lok Fu was illegally selling endangered Soba fish. Officers conducted a patrol at the restaurant and found two live Soba fish displayed in a fish tank. The restaurant owner presented documentation indicating that the fish were caught in the wild.

The department stated that Soba fish are listed under Appendix II of the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES), and possession requires a permit. Since the owner could not produce the necessary permit, the department seized the fish for further investigation.

A spokesperson said that illegal possession of endangered species is a serious crime. Anyone convicted of such an offense could face a maximum fine of HKD 10 million and up to 10 years in prison. The items involved will also be confiscated upon conviction.
