Reuters citing sources said Tesla (US: TSLA) plans to purchase $2.9 billion (about HKD 22.6 billion) worth of equipment from Chinese supplier Suzhou Miiwa Technology (Shenzhen: 300751) for the production of solar panels and batteries. Tesla founder Elon Musk aims to add 100 GW of solar power capacity in the United States. The power generation facilities will mainly serve Tesla, with some electricity also used to power SpaceX satellites. Chinese media reported that Chinese photovoltaic companies have confirmed the procurement.

In January, Musk stated that solar energy could meet all of America’s electricity needs, including the growing demand from data centers. Tesla’s official website shows that the company plans to produce 100 GW of solar products domestically in the U.S. by the end of 2028. The report indicates that Musk’s photovoltaic orders are divided between SpaceX (S chain) and Tesla (T chain), corresponding to space and ground applications.

Sources said Miiwa is the world’s largest manufacturer of screen-printed solar cell equipment and is one of the main candidates for the supply project. They are currently applying for export permits from China’s Ministry of Commerce. Other Chinese companies in negotiations include Jiejia Weichuang (Shenzhen: 300724) and Laplace (Shanghai: 688726). The news states Tesla requires the equipment to be delivered before this fall.
