Reuters, citing sources, reports that Nvidia is preparing to launch an AI chip from Groq that will be available in the Chinese market, expected to be released in May.

Sources say that the chip being prepared for the Chinese market is not a scaled-down version nor specifically designed for China. However, the new version can be adapted for other systems.

Nvidia obtained technology licensing from AI chip startup Groq at the end of last year and showcased a series of new products based on its chips at the annual developer conference held this week in San Jose, California.

Nvidia plans to use the Groq chip for so-called inference computations, where AI systems answer questions, write code, or perform tasks for users. Among the products demonstrated this week, the company plans to combine the upcoming Vera Rubin chip with the Groq chip. The Vera Rubin chip cannot be sold in China.

Although Nvidia dominates the AI system training market, it faces more intense competition in the inference chip market. Several large Chinese companies, including Baidu (09888), have started producing their own inference chips.
