An injured tennis player unexpectedly ends his participation in the Open Occitanie

The European leg of the professional circuit is already underway after the Australian Open, where Carlos Alcaraz made history. In this new phase, the Montpellier tournament experienced an extraordinary yet unfortunate incident when a player was hit in the face during his match, becoming a injured tennis player who had to withdraw early from the competition.

Drama on the main court: when a volley caused an unexpected injury

During the evening session on the central court Patrice Dominguez, French players Arthur Gea and Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard faced off on the tournament’s opening day. The match was progressing with Gea clearly in the lead (5-3, 30-0 in the first set) when the unfortunate event occurred. As Mpetshi Perricard approached the net to execute a volley, he was directly hit in the left eye by the ball. The injured player immediately called for the tournament medical team.

Although the medical staff provided ophthalmological treatment right away, the severity of the blow prevented the player from continuing. After just 38 minutes of play, Mpetshi Perricard was forced to withdraw, leaving the match unfinished and allowing Gea to automatically advance to the second round.

Mpetshi Perricard’s career: a season of ups and downs

The 22-year-old player from Lyon had started 2026 showing consistent performance. He reached the quarterfinals in both Brisbane and Auckland, demonstrating a respectable competitive level. However, his run at the Australian Open ended unfavorably: he lost in five sets to Argentine Sebastián Báez in a lively match that did not favor him.

Despite beginning his professional career in development, Mpetshi Perricard has already achieved significant milestones. In 2024, he claimed two ATP titles: first in Lyon on clay, then in Basel on indoor hard courts. These victories showcase his ability to adapt to different surfaces, especially indoors where his aggressive style tends to thrive.

The Montpellier tournament and the consequences of the withdrawal

With the injured player’s withdrawal, Arthur Gea—who had received a special invitation from the organizers—advanced unexpectedly to his next challenge. He will face Czech player Tomas Machac, ranked 28th in the world and seeded as the third favorite in the tournament.

Gea arrives with notable credentials in this tournament window. He surprisingly defeated fellow Czech Jiri Lehecka (world No. 19) in Melbourne, though he later lost to Stan Wawrinka in an exciting five-set match. In Montpellier, he also advanced past the qualifying rounds by defeating Argentine Román Burruchaga.

The Open Occitanie in Montpellier is an ATP 250 event offering €612,000 in prize money. Canadian Felix Auger-Aliassime is the top contender for the title. This tournament is the only ATP event taking place this week, coinciding with several Davis Cup matches, including Argentina’s upcoming encounter against South Korea next weekend in Busan. The incident involving the injured player will undoubtedly remain a memorable episode of this edition of the tournament.
