Since starting to follow the Windows 98 revival project in 2023, we are now entering the fourth year, with various technical solutions continuously evolving. As virtual machines and emulation environments advance, users now have more options to relive classic gaming experiences.

Leading Virtual Machine Solutions: VirtualBox and SoftGPU Combo Win Big

Among many nostalgic gaming solutions, virtual machine technology stands out due to its high efficiency through virtualization. Combining VirtualBox with SoftGPU not only supports Windows 98 compatibility but also offers 4K resolution visuals, making it the top choice for desktop platforms.

The core difference between virtual machines and emulators lies in performance. Virtualization can send programs directly to the physical CPU for execution, which outperforms software-based emulation of x86 processors. This is why products like VirtualBox and VMware are widely used in commercial applications.

However, virtual machines have limitations, such as only running on x86 architecture computers, which makes them unsuitable for ARM-based mobile devices or newer hardware. But for desktop users, the stability and performance provided by virtual machines are sufficient for most nostalgic gaming needs.

Emulators Continue to Evolve with Diverse Solutions

Another technological approach is emulation. The DOSBox family, representing x86 emulators, simulates x86 processors via software, enabling DOS and Windows 98 programs to run on modern systems. DOSBox-X and DOSBox Pure have added 3dfx Voodoo 3D acceleration emulation, greatly expanding game compatibility.

PCem uses similar emulation principles to fully restore Intel Pentium II processors and Voodoo 3 3000 3D accelerators, allowing users to relive the nostalgic boot screens and BIOS setup processes. Due to its discontinued updates, 86Box, a derivative, continues development and supports more “semi-legacy” 3D games. It has successfully run classics like “Crazy City Racing 2” on an Intel N100 mini PC.

Compared to virtual machines, emulators excel in cross-platform compatibility. DOSBox Pure, using the libretro API via RetroArch, can run on smartphones, single-board computers, and other devices, offering nostalgic gaming experiences beyond desktops.

Standalone Tool DOSBox Pure Unleashed Emerges

By late 2024, DOSBox Pure released version 1.0 Preview, adding disk hotkeys and Voodoo upscaling features. Subsequent updates to Preview 3 and 4 continued to optimize gaming experience. Notably, in October 2025, developer schellingb launched DOSBox Pure Unleashed, making it a standalone program that does not require RetroArch, greatly improving usability.

DOSBox Pure Unleashed maintains the strong game controller support of its predecessor while preserving the cross-platform advantages of emulators, serving as a bridge between nostalgic experiences and modern convenience. It is especially suitable for players accustomed to gamepads and those seeking lightweight solutions.

Rise of Mobile and Linux Cross-Platform Solutions

Beyond traditional desktop options, emerging cross-platform tools are transforming the retro gaming scene. Winlator, an Android-based Windows compatibility layer built on Wine and Box64, can run Windows 98 and XP games directly—though it does not emulate a full Windows OS—and allows control via gamepads, providing convenience for mobile players.

Loss32 is an upcoming Linux distribution that aims to integrate Linux kernel and Wine technology, offering a “plug-and-play” experience for running Windows programs. While not a full Windows OS emulation, it provides a simple, user-friendly environment for nostalgic gaming, giving Linux users new options.

These emerging solutions indicate that nostalgic gaming is no longer limited to virtual machines and traditional emulators but is moving toward diverse, cross-platform approaches. Users can choose the most suitable technology based on their device capabilities and preferences.

Solution Selection Guide and Outlook for 2026

Different scenarios favor different solutions. Desktop users seeking high efficiency and 4K visuals will prefer VirtualBox with virtualization. Players needing cross-platform support and gamepad compatibility may find DOSBox Pure Unleashed more flexible. Mobile users can enjoy games via Winlator.

Looking ahead to 2026, Windows 98 nostalgia solutions will continue to evolve. The boundaries between virtual machines and emulators will further blur, with new tools constantly emerging. Additionally, innovative concepts like “Windows 98 AI PC” are in development, promising to blend AI technology with traditional virtualization for unprecedented nostalgic gaming experiences.
