On March 17, Joseph Kent, Director of the U.S. National Counterterrorism Center, resigned due to the United States and Israel’s war against Iran. In a letter posted on social media addressed to President Trump, he stated: “Iran does not pose an imminent threat to our country.”

In his letter to Trump, Kent said: “After careful consideration, I have decided to resign as Director of the National Counterterrorism Center, effective immediately.

I cannot in good conscience support the ongoing war with Iran. Iran does not pose an immediate threat to our nation. It is clear that this war was triggered by pressure from Israel and its powerful lobbying groups in the United States.

I support the values and foreign policies you upheld during your campaigns in 2016, 2020, and 2024—principles that were also implemented during your first term. Until June 2025, you clearly recognized that the war in the Middle East is a trap that has taken the lives of our patriots and drained our nation’s wealth and prosperity.

During your first administration, you demonstrated a better understanding than any modern president of how to decisively use military force while avoiding endless wars.

In the early days of this administration, high-ranking Israeli officials and influential members of the U.S. media launched a disinformation campaign that completely undermined your ‘America First’ policy and incited public support for war against Iran. This echo chamber was used to mislead you into believing that Iran posed a direct threat to the U.S., and to persuade you that immediate strikes would lead to quick victory. This is a lie—just as Israel used to drag us into the disastrous Iraq War, which cost us thousands of our best young men and women. We cannot make the same mistake again.

As a veteran who has fought on the battlefield 11 times and as a family member who lost a beloved wife in the war manufactured by Israel, I cannot support sending the next generation into a war that benefits no one in America and cannot be justified at the cost of American lives.

I hope you will reflect on everything we have done in Iran and consider for whom we are truly fighting. The time for decisive action has arrived. You can change course and forge a new path for the country; or you can allow us to further slide into decline and chaos. The ball is in your court.”
