IT House, March 3 — According to an announcement released by George Washington University on Monday local time, Amazon’s data services division will acquire the university’s Science and Technology Campus in Virginia for $427 million (IT House note: approximately 2.948 billion RMB at current exchange rates). The acquisition aims to strengthen Amazon’s infrastructure to support the expansion of its artificial intelligence business.

The campus, located in Ashburn, Virginia, will be transformed into a data center or information technology hub under contractual authorization. An Amazon spokesperson declined to comment immediately on the acquisition. However, the company previously announced plans to invest $35 billion (approximately 241.606 billion RMB at current exchange rates) in expanding its data centers in Virginia by 2040. This does not include the $35 billion Amazon has already invested in the Northern Virginia region over the past decade up to 2020.

To seize the wave of AI and technology infrastructure expansion, tech companies’ related spending in 2023 has approached $630 billion. Despite potential market risks, companies are still prepared to scale up to meet the surging demand for artificial intelligence, software, and computer chips. Meanwhile, George Washington University is facing ongoing cost-cutting and structural deficit issues and hopes to improve its financial situation through this sale.
