On the evening of March 15, Pang Donglai issued a statement in response to the blogger “Wang Hai Testing” regarding the detection of xanthophyll in their fresh eggs. The statement said that the relevant investigation by market regulatory authorities and third-party re-testing have not yet yielded results. If the final investigation shows that the fresh eggs have issues, the results will be publicly disclosed immediately, and the recall and removal process will be initiated promptly, with legal responsibilities undertaken according to law. If no problems are found, Pang Donglai will resolutely pursue legal action to defend rights and hold individuals, media, and platforms legally responsible for this incident.

In the explanation, Pang Donglai stated that the fresh eggs sold in their stores have been sent to three testing companies for re-examination. Market regulatory authorities have also inspected the store’s procurement compliance and sampled various brands of fresh eggs for testing.

On March 13, blogger “Wang Hai Testing” released a video claiming that eggs from Xuchang Pang Donglai Supermarket contained an artificial pigment called xanthophyll (canthaxanthin), with a content of 9.54 mg/kg, exceeding the maximum allowable amount of 8 mg/kg for canthaxanthin in poultry feed as specified by the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs’ “Standards for Safe Use of Feed Additives.” This poses certain food safety risks.

The reporter noted that the account “Pang Donglai Supermarket Customer Service,” verified as “Xuchang Pang Donglai Supermarket Co., Ltd.,” responded in the comments section of the video, stating that Pang Donglai has taken note of the video and attaches great importance to it.

On March 14, the Xuchang Market Supervision Bureau announced that they have accepted the complaint and will publish the investigation results within 15 working days. Legal experts analyzed that xanthophyll is permitted as a feed coloring agent, but China has not set residue limits for this substance in fresh eggs, and relevant food additive standards do not apply in this case.
