Sony’s proprietary blockchain “Soneium” testnet, “Soneium Minami,” has been released as a public environment for all developers and creators. Led by Startale Labs CEO Sota Watanabe, a new era of Web3 application development is about to begin. This testnet launch marks an important milestone in Sony’s positioning within the blockchain industry.

Public Deployment of Soneium Minami—A Risk-Free Environment for Developers

“To realize this vision, we have released Soneium Minami,” Sony explains. Soneium Minami functions as a testnet environment operating as a public blockchain, accessible to all developers and creators interested in building applications.

The key feature of the testnet is the use of test cryptocurrencies, allowing users to experience and verify Web3 applications without real-world risks. Anyone can freely access applications on the testnet and test their functionality. This open system design significantly lowers the barriers to development.

Startale Labs CEO Sota Watanabe’s Strategy—Three-Phase Plan and Up to $100,000 Investment Cap

As CEO of Startale Labs, Watanabe announced a three-phase deployment plan for the Soneium blockchain. Under this strategic growth plan, Sony has launched the Soneium Spark Incubation program, providing up to $100,000 in investment per team.

This program is operated in collaboration with multiple Sony Group companies, including Sony, Sony Music, Sony Pictures, Sony Global Education, Sony Innovation Fund, and Inzone. Under Watanabe’s leadership, the development of a Web3 ecosystem is being systematically promoted.

Integration Across Industries—Collaboration with Astar Network and the Future of Web3

Sony has established partnerships with key players such as Pyth Network, Alchemy Pay, Privy, Rair, Reservoir, Sentio, and Sequence to support application development on the Soneium blockchain. At the same time, it is working with infrastructure layer providers like Chainlink, Alchemy, Astar Network, The Graph, and Circle.

Of particular note is the infrastructure and asset integration with Astar Network. By integrating its resources with Soneium, Astar Network is advancing toward a more robust and multifunctional Web3 platform. This strategic collaboration is expected to significantly accelerate Sony’s Web3 vision.

From Past Acquisitions to the Present Path

A notable move in Sony’s blockchain expansion was the acquisition of cryptocurrency exchange Whalefin in August 2023. The company has since rebranded as S.BLOX, with a service launch imminent. The release of the testnet and expansion of incubation efforts clearly indicate that Sony’s blockchain strategy is shifting from mere acquisitions to independent platform development and ecosystem building.
