The U.S. Department of Defense reportedly allows continued use of Anthropic products in actions related to national security.

An internal memo shows that the U.S. Department of Defense has informed its senior leadership that if they believe using Anthropic’s AI tools is critical to national security, they may continue to use the tools after the previously announced six-month phase-out period ends. The memo states that these exemptions can be granted in “rare and exceptional circumstances” and will “only be considered for activities that directly support national security operations, have no feasible alternatives, and are mission-critical.” The document indicates that any Pentagon unit seeking an exemption must submit a comprehensive risk mitigation plan for approval.
