Iranian Ambassador to China responds to Global Times: Will promote the easing of current tensions and political resolution through a "three-step" approach

The military strike by Israel and the United States against Iran has entered its 11th day. On the 9th, Iran’s Ambassador to China, Abdul Reza Rahmani Fazli, held a press conference in Beijing to explain Iran’s position on the current crisis and diplomatic policy directions. When asked by a Global Times reporter, Fazli stated that under the leadership of the new Supreme Leader, Iran advocates following the “three-step” plan proposed by senior Iranian officials during calls to promote de-escalation and political resolution of the current situation.

On March 9th, local time, an expert meeting in Iran confirmed Movahedi Kermani as the new Supreme Leader. When asked whether Iran would continue to resolve the crisis through political and diplomatic means under the leadership of the new Supreme Leader, Fazli said that Iran advocates following the “three-step” plan proposed by senior officials during calls to promote de-escalation and political resolution:

First step: end the war and achieve a ceasefire. The war should be stopped first by the initiator, and action must be taken to force the U.S. and Israel to immediately cease all military attacks.

Second step: return to the negotiating table. However, since we no longer trust the U.S., this step is difficult to achieve and almost impossible unless major world powers and the UN Security Council can intervene, play a positive role, and provide binding and inviolable guarantees to ensure no further acts of aggression during negotiations, while establishing a lasting and reliable mechanism to uphold the results of the talks.

Third step: all countries should unite and cooperate to resist unilateralism and promote the development of multilateralism.

“Based on the full respect and implementation of the above principles, we are willing to resume relevant dialogue,” Fazli said.

According to the Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs website on March 9, Chinese Special Envoy for Middle East Affairs, Zhai Jun, met with Secretary-General of the Gulf Cooperation Council, Nayef Falah Mubarak Al-Hajraf, in Riyadh on March 8. Zhai Jun stated that China will further play a constructive role, working with the GCC and Gulf countries to actively promote peace and cease hostilities, and to de-escalate tensions. Fazli highly appreciated and eagerly anticipated China’s mediation efforts.

Fazli told the Global Times reporter that we welcome any measures taken by China to help end the war and prevent further acts of aggression. As a major power, China has significant influence in the region and the world. We believe and look forward to China encouraging relevant parties to exercise restraint through dialogue, which will be crucial in promoting a ceasefire and stopping acts of aggression.
