Gulman: After the release of the Apple M6 MacBook Pro, the M5 Pro / Max models will not be discontinued.
IT House, March 9 — Apple usually stops selling the previous generation immediately after launching a new model. For example, after the release of the M5Pro/M5Max MacBook Pro, the M4Pro/M4Max models are removed from the official website.
Bloomberg reporter Mark Gurman mentioned in the latest issue of Power On that Apple will not discontinue the M5Pro/M5Max models after the release of the M6 MacBook Pro because the M6 model will be priced higher and positioned as more premium.
It is reported that the M6 MacBook Pro is expected to feature a new chassis, upgraded OLED touch screen, and a 2nm process chip. These upgrades will likely increase the overall price. For example, when Apple switched the iPad to OLED screens, the starting price increased by 20%. When the iPhone transitioned to OLED in 2017, the starting price was also raised to $1,000 (IT House note: approximately 6,914 RMB at current exchange rates).
Given this history, Gurman believes that the M6 MacBook Pro will be positioned above the current models, representing a different product tier rather than replacing the existing ones. Although Apple may continue to use the traditional “MacBook Pro” name, using the name “MacBook Ultra” could more clearly indicate that this model sits at the top of the MacBook product line.
