Hong Kong Exchanges and Clearing (00388) Last year, its charitable foundation launched a Caregiver Support Program. Chairman Charles Li said the funding will be doubled to HKD 50 million, describing the program as a way for HKEX to play the role of a super connector, linking decision-makers, NGOs, social enterprises, the business community, scholars, and medical professionals, so caregivers can receive the recognition and support they deserve.

He emphasized that caregivers are the silent backbone of society, connecting families and communities. The program reflects HKEX’s commitment to resource integration and social cohesion, aiming to bring a profound impact to Hong Kong society and beyond. The goal is to spread positive energy and build a warmer society.

“Smart Accident Detection System” to be installed in at least 300 high-risk caregiver households, completion expected before Q3

He revealed that HKEX’s charitable foundation will sponsor a pilot project, in partnership with the Labour and Welfare Bureau, to install the “Smart Accident Detection System” in at least 300 households of high-risk caregivers, enhancing their safety.

Labour and Welfare Bureau Secretary Law Chi-kwong hopes to complete the installation by the third quarter of this year. The pilot aims to use smart technology to detect home accidents involving caregivers or those being cared for, enabling early intervention and rapid assistance. The system can detect falls, prolonged immobility, and even smoke, with technology designed to accommodate Hong Kong’s small living spaces and other limitations.

Partnering with Link REIT to establish community facilities and identify caregivers for support

HKEX General Counsel and Group Chief Sustainability Officer Charles Li added that the project will run for several years, with 10 existing partners. He hopes more organizations will join in the coming years to create caregiver-friendly environments in local communities, with positive social, corporate, policy, and cultural impacts.

At the community level, support teams will be established in Tai Po and Kwun Tong, providing comprehensive services to caregivers, targeting 2,500 elderly care providers and 1,000 caregivers of children with special educational needs (SEN). Additionally, through a pilot project with Link REIT (00823), two new community facilities will be set up at Kwun Tong Shun Lee Shopping Centre to identify caregivers and connect them with relevant support services. These include tailored fitness classes and social activities to improve mental health, with plans to expand to other areas in the future.

On the corporate side, Li hopes to improve the identification of on-the-job caregivers within companies and strengthen support for their needs. He also advocates promoting caregiver-friendly workplaces through charters, recognition programs, and other initiatives.
